Aki Kuroda Cosmocity

London, England

April - June 2007

Having last shown his abstract odalisque silhouettes in the UK in 1990, Aki Kuroda has since immersed himself in a new world of inspiration: the Cosmogarden. It is a broad theme encompassing five performance projects in Ivry (1997), Avignon (1993 and 2000) and Paris (1993 and 2000) around the installed universe of his sculptures, paintings and ideas. This stimulating and wide-ranging practice is to be brought together for an exhibition in London for rabih hage : projects.

Working closely with award-winning London-based architect and gallery owner, Rabih Hage, Kuroda will dÈbut the brand new rabih hage : projects for which he is to create an innovative series of limited edition sculpture-furniture and installation at Rabih Hageís headquarters, Sloane Avenue. The installation will draw on a selection of paintings, sculpture, video and photographic art all linked to the Cosmogarden ñ from the painted Flowers series to the hybrid representation of the Cosmocity. His sculpture-furniture take as a starting point the Cosmogarden and morph through flights of fantasy into objects that could easily fit within the Cosmocity universe of Kurodaís.

The installation provides an inspiring platform from which to view the diverse work of Kuroda and from which to rediscover the variety of expressions and emotions of Kurodaís work and its strong (poetic) evolution over the last sixteen years.

Born in Kyoto in 1944, Kurodaís flexible and adventurous approach to making art has resulted in a diverse range of projects ranging from a collaboration with Tadao Ando for a residential building mural in Osaka, Japan (1993 - 94), to ballet stage sets for Angelin Preljocaj at the Opera de Paris (1993), to creating sculptural walls and murals with Richard Rogers for a theatre centre in Kyoto, Japan (2003), amongst many others.
