Gaetano Pesce: Alda Lamps
London, England
September 2004
During London design week 2004, celebrated designer Gaetano Pesce is launching his new Alda Lamp collection at Rabih Hage. The Alda Lamps come in three designs, in various vivid colours and are made from polyurethane material to make them moveable and flexible. The lamps’ colours and unusual shapes are inspired by the sea and its creatures, specifically jellyfish.
The jellyfish has no particular shape and has the ability to change size according to its surrounding conditions. The name Alda is the name of Gaetano’s mother, who brought up three children by giving musical concerts. When you touch the alda lamp, it makes sounds of different natures, which remind Gaetano of the music of reality, without order.
Gaetano Pesce is one of today’s most versatile and unconventional designers. Born in 1939, he has been expanding the notions and structures of Italian new design throughout his career. While still at school in Venice, where he studied architecture and industrial design, he opened a studio in Padua with Milena Vettore.
He was also part of a collective working in the fine arts focusing on the idea of programmed art that had emerged from the 1920s Bauhaus movement.
Throughout his career he has continued to produce vibrant and radical work in painting, sculpture, film, theatre, design and architecture, making a name for his idiosyncratic work. Iconic designs include the ‘up’ series of furniture he designed for B&B Italia.
