Karen Ryan: Custom Made
January - March 2007
The Rabih Hage gallery presents a new collection of furniture and ceramics by the innovative British designer Karen Ryan.
With a strong sense of reinvention and construction techniques, Ryan’s unique and distinctive designs provide an interesting dichotomy between cultural comment and functional pieces.
It is important to Ryan that her pieces can be utilised for what they are, whilst she introduces an aesthetic that makes the observer ponder a more profound and ironic message, in what she describes as ‘three-dimensional poetry’.
For example in her Second Hand plates and Unmade vase collection, Ryan salvaged abandoned plates and vases, removed the original glazing with the exception of traces of statements which clearly pay homage to the purpose of her message.
